Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Monday said it had arrested a 28-year-old man wanted in connection with the death of an Australian woman, Jette Jacobs, and for defrauding her of $90,000 in an online dating scam.

According to the agency, Orowo Jesse Omokoh was arrested on January 28 in Nigeria, without stating where exactly.

The graduate, who attended the University of Ibadan, in the southwest of the country, will be brought before court for extradition proceedings, a spokesman said.

The suspect allegedly met the 67 year old Aussie on a dating site and struck a sizzling romantic affair that necessitated him moving to Johannesburg in 2013 to link up with his lover.

Omokoh allegedly arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa on February 4, 2013, to meet with Jacob who had been in Johannesburg since November 2012.

Five days after Omokoh arrived and took up residence with her, Jacob was found dead in her apartment with some of her valuables missing.

After the incident, Omokoh reportedly fled South Africa and returned to Nigeria.

“The South African police, which is investigating the mysterious death, are suspicious that Omokoh has a hand in the demise of Jacobs,” the EFCC said.

The organisation, which investigates money-laundering and online scams, said Australian Federal Police informed officers in March that Omokoh had allegedly defrauded Jacobs of $90,000.

Jacobs, a grandmother from Western Australia, reportedly sent tens of thousands of dollars to Nigeria during her four-year “romance” with a man known as “Jesse”, according to Australian media.

The 67-year-old is said to have previously met him in Johannesburg in 2010 without incident.

Her body was found on February 9. The EFCC said Omokoh had given “useful” information and “efforts are on to track his accomplices”

Facebook Is 10 years Today!!! Read CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Message

Mark-Zuckerberg-on-Bloomberg-B-257x300

Facebook is today marking 10 years since it went live in a Harvard dorm room, with boss Mark Zuckerberg hailing the “incredible journey” that has seen the social media site become a part of life for millions of people around the world.

Conceived as a way to connect students, it now boasts 1.23 billion monthly users, or about one-sixth of the world’s population.

Those users have made 201.6 billion friend connections and clicked the ‘like button’ 3.4 trillion times.

Along the way Facebook has been involved in a lengthy legal fight between co-founders and embroiled in concerns over privacy, but Mr Zuckerberg remains positive.

Read his message;
Today is Facebook’s 10th anniversary.

It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. It’s rare to be able to touch so many people’s lives, and I try to remind myself to make the most of every day and have the biggest impact I can.

People often ask if I always knew that Facebook would become what it is today. No way.

I remember getting pizza with my friends one night in college shortly after opening Facebook. I told them I was excited to help connect our school community, but one day someone needed to connect the whole world.

I always thought this was important — giving people the power to share and stay connected, empowering people to build their own communities themselves.

When I reflect on the last 10 years, one question I ask myself is: why were we the ones to build this? We were just students. We had way fewer resources than big companies. If they had focused on this problem, they could have done it.

The only answer I can think of is: we just cared more.

While some doubted that connecting the world was actually important, we were building. While others doubted that this would be sustainable, you were forming lasting connections.

We just cared more about connecting the world than anyone else. And we still do today.

That’s why I’m even more excited about the next ten years than the last. The first ten years were about bootstrapping this network. Now we have the resources to help people across the world solve even bigger and more important problems.

Today, only one-third of the world’s population has access to the internet. In the next decade, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to connect the other two-thirds.

Today, social networks are mostly about sharing moments. In the next decade, they’ll also help you answer questions and solve complex problems.

Today, we have only a few ways to share our experiences. In the next decade, technology will enable us to create many more ways to capture and communicate new kinds of experiences.

It’s been amazing to see how all of you have used our tools to build a real community. You’ve shared the happy moments and the painful ones. You’ve started new families, and kept spread out families connected. You’ve created new services and built small businesses. You’ve helped each other in so many ways.

I’m so grateful to be able to help build these tools for you. I feel a deep responsibility to make the most of my time here and serve you the best I can.

Thank you for letting me be a part of this journey.

Photo: EFCC arrests UI student over $90,000 romance scam

An undergraduate of the University of Ibadan, 28-year old Orowo Jesse Omokoh, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] for allegedly obtaining $90,000 (Ninety Thousand Dollars) from one Jette Jacob, an Australian woman based in Johannesburg, South Africa, in what is suspected to be romance scam.

A statement by EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspect allegedly met the Aussie on a dating site and struck a sizzling romantic affair that necessitated him moving to Johannesburg in 2013 to link up with his lover.

Mr. Omokoh allegedly arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa on February 4, 2013, to meet with Ms. Jacob who had been in Johannesburg since November 2012.

Five days after the undergraduate arrived and took up residence with her, Ms. Jacob was found dead in her apartment with some of her valuables missing.

After the incident, Mr. Omokoh reportedly fled South Africa and returned to Nigeria.

The South African Police, which is investigating the mysterious death, are suspicious that Mr. Omokoh has a hand in the demise of Ms. Jacob.

On March 15, 2013, the EFCC received a petition from Richard Stanford of Australian Federal Police, asking for help to track Mr. Omokoh, alleging that the Nigerian defrauded Ms. Jacob to the tune of $90,000 in a dating scam.

The Commission swung into action almost immediately but the suspected fraudster had been elusive until a few days ago when he was nabbed.

He has already made useful statement while efforts are on to track his accomplices.

The suspect would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed.

“ Eden Hazard is the best young player in the world” – Mourinho

Hazard-City-Feb2014-300x194

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, has hailed Eden Hazard, as the best youngster in football, after he starred again in the Blues’ 1-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Belgian attacker caused the hosts all sorts of problems, as Chelsea ended City’s 100% home record and Mourinho believes that the 23-year-old can go on to be the best.

“He needs to keep his feet on the ground,” Mourinho told reporters. “He still has to improve but he is probably the best young player in the world with legs to go there [to the level of Messi and Ronaldo].

“Give him time, and Willian, [Andre] Schurrle, [Mohamed] Salah too. Give them time. They need good results and so this result is very important for them.”

On why his team tend to perform better in the big games, Mourinho replied: “We love the big games. When you love it maybe you feel extra-motivated. The best thing for our evolution is to play matches under pressure, to be close to the leaders, and today we came here and played against the leaders and we deserved it.

“There are two horses and a little horse – a little horse that still needs milk and work and to learn how to jump. There are two big horses and the last horse, a horse that next season can race.

“We have beaten the best team twice. In the first game we won because Fernando [Torres] was bright; now we won because we were the best team.”

First Lady Patience Jonathan pays for 800 heart surgeries for children

first-lady-patience-jonathan1-300x2001

More than 800 Nigerian children with heart related problems have been sponsored to India for treatment by A. Aruera Reachout Foundation, an NGO being run by the wife of Nigeria’s president, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Mrs. Jonathan however declined to take the credit, giving all the plaudits to God.

Jonathan gave the thanks in Abuja when she received the last batch of children sent to India by the NGO for heart-related surgeries in 2013.

“I want to thank God for their safe trip to India; there has been no story of deaths or unsuccessful cases; we praise God on behalf of these kids.

“We have treated more than 800 patients with no record of casualty; I’m happier than you, the parents’’, she said.

The wife of the President said she was pleased to learn that some of the kids had enrolled in schools and appealed to the parents to return the children to the foundation should complications arise.

“Please don’t take them to native doctors, return them to the foundation and please learn to pray for them. You as parents are in the best position to pray for them.

She informed the parents of the 250-bed heart hospital under construction “which will hopefully be open to the public this year and we believe it will be one of the best.

“We are partnering with our international friends from South Korea, India and America who will run the hospital.’’

Mrs Yemisi Oyewole, the Senior Special Assistant to the President, who coordinates the activities of the NGO, described the new phase of the children’s lives as “rebirth.

“As mothers, we can imagine what these mothers have gone through and where they’ve been in the course of seeking solution to their problems.

“We know that when a child is sick, the mother is sick and heart treatment is not cheap, it’s expensive. This care was provided at no cost to these families and we thank the first lady for giving the kids a new life.’’

Dr Daubry Stevens, the NGO doctor, in his report, said 86 children applied to the foundation, 36 were short listed to travel to India while the remaining were treated here.

“Of that number, 17 were discharged as fit. These are the last batch of 13 children that left for India in November 2013. They were evaluated and booked immediately for surgery.

“Their post-operative period was successful. Before they came to us, they had spent a minimum of five to eight months in various hospitals. They had plenty scars on their bodies but since our return, none of them has had any cause to visit the hospital.’’

Miss Aisha Aliu, who gave thanks on behalf of the children, said “I thank you for saving my life, for your contribution towards my heart surgery, may God bless you ma.’’

Hajiya Habiba Abdulsamad, who spoke on behalf of the mothers, said “we thank you for saving the lives of our children and for feeling our pain when we went through the most difficult period; you are God-sent.

“I’m also happy to hear there’s a clinic under construction in Nigeria for cases as these because there are lots of children with heart problems.’’

Some of the children present were: Rabiu Obere from Nasarawa; Sultan Lamidi from Lagos; Salamatu Abdulsamad from Kano; Noah Ezeilo from Imo and Sita Omago from Akwa Ibom.
